about
I wrote this while attending a program at The Evergreen State College. Here is part of the paper I had written about it:
"To begin forming this composition, I started with a space to draw inspiration. I have always been captivated by the coast of the Pacific Northwest. There is something so inviting yet also harsh and unforgiving about it. The weather is almost always windy and overcast, and the water is often murky and cold. It is not a relaxing experience in the same way that beaches in warmer climates are and you won't find people sunbathing or swimming to cool off very often, if ever. Yet something about the nature of this coast brings my mind to peace. It is the rock that my consciousness is tied to. I could not rationally explain this attachment, but it is something I am reminded of every time I visit. Through this composition, I hoped to create a space that resonates with the coast and reflects my experiences of it."
I should mention that specifically the Washington coast is what I am referring to. The Oregon coast is equally breathtaking, but I have spent much less time on various beaches there.
I also beat around the bush about why I feel an attachment to this coast, but it is because my family has been here for at least 40 generations. I'm not sure why I was apprehensive about disclosing that in this paper, but it was on my mind while composing this. I continue later:
"...A part of Makah mythology that fascinates me is the relationship between the wolf and the orca whale. The wolf can transform into the orca and the orca to the wolf. This portion of the composition partly represents the transformation that occurs when the wolf enters the water. It is here that the listener enters the open ocean."
This is a pretty different sort of release for me, so I hope you enjoy it.
